When responders encounter a suspicious device or container, the safest course is to treat it as potentially explosive and keep people out of harm’s way. Establish a safe perimeter, evacuate the area, and avoid any tampering or attempts to inspect or disarm the device yourself. Only trained explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) personnel should handle or remotely assess and, if necessary, render the device safe. Maintaining distance and using established blast-resistant perimeters protects against overpressure, fragmentation, and secondary hazards such as fire, leaking fuels, or hazardous fumes. If the device cannot be cleared immediately, monitor the scene from a safe distance and await direction from EOD. Ignoring or moving the device, or attempting to disarm it, elevates the risk to you and others and should be avoided.

Move the device to a safe location and disassemble it.

Ignore it if it looks old.
